Do you have a Government Gateway account?

  • No, a Government Gateway account is required to access HMRC services online, file tax returns, and stay compliant with MTD. Whether you're self-employed, a limited company director, or managing rental income, this guide walks you through the process.

What you need

Before you start, make sure you have the following:

  • Your National Insurance number

  • A valid UK phone number and email address

  • Your UK passport, payslip, or P60 to confirm your identity

For limited companies, you may also need your Company UTR number (Unique Taxpayer Reference and Companies House number.

4 simple steps to create your Government Gateway account

Step 1: Open an account

The link above will have directed you to HMRC's site.

  • Scroll down the page and click the green 'Sign in' button.

  • Click the 'Create sign in details' link below the Sign in button.

  • Enter your email address and HMRC will email you a time-sensitive confirmation code.

  • Enter the code to verify your email address.

  • Choose a password and set up a recovery word or a memorable piece of information.

Once complete, you’ll receive a 12-digit Government Gateway ID. Save this somewhere safe, it’s your login to HMRC online services.

Step 2: Choose your account type

You’ll be asked what you want the account for. Select Personal tax.

Step 3: Verify your identity

To complete the process, HMRC will ask for ID verification:

  • Use your UK passport, payslip, or P60.

  • You may also need to answer questions about your credit history.

‍Step 4: Link HMRC services to your account

Once verified, you can link the service you need. Just register for Self-Assessmen‍t.

What Happens Next?

  • HMRC may send you activation codes by post for added security.

  • Once received, log back into your account and enter the code to activate the service.

You’re all done! Now you're ready to sign up for MTD.
