Sign up for Making Tax Digital (MTD)

A step-by-step guide

Updated this week

Before you start, you will need a Government Gateway account.

Click here to start and sign in to your Government Gateway account. A 6-digit access code will be sent to your mobile phone. Enter the code, and you will be asked the following:

  • To confirm that you are using MTD compliant software.

  • When you want to start using MTD for Income Tax Self-Assessment (current year or next year).

  • When your accounting period is (6th April to 5th April, 1st April to 31st March, or neither of these).

  • To agree and accept HMRC's MTD terms.

Selecting your income sources

Add all of the sources you get income from. For each income source, you will need to confirm whether you received an income from it before 6th April 2023.

You do not need to add income from partnerships.

  • Sole trader businesses: You’re a sole trader if you run your own business as an individual and work for yourself. This is also known as being self-employed. You’re not a sole trader if your only business income is from a limited company.

  • Income from property: Income you get from property includes letting houses, flats, or holiday homes either on a long-term or short-term basis. If you have more than one UK property, treat them as one income source. However, each foreign property is treated as a separate income source.

After selecting all your income sources, you will be asked to review your answers before signing up.
